If Britain is to thrive in the modern world we cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal of driving standards in schools, on opening out opportunities for young people to study, to train or to do an apprenticeship.

We have driven huge improvements in the number of young people training, and in the standards of education across the board. We seen some of the best ever exam results at every age. But there is more to do.

Our plans will see us give every child the guarantee of a good education, from catch up tuition so that all children leave primary school secure in the 3Rs, to the right to a sixth-form, college or apprenticeship place for school leavers. And parents will be offered guarantees of a good school, with good discipline properly enforced including signed contracts between the school and parents so that everybody knows their responsibilities in enforcing discipline and good behaviour. We will also introduce school report cards giving parents full information on their choice of local schools – including other parents’ views.

Our challenge now is to go even further to support teachers, pupils and parents to improve our schools because we believe in guaranteeing high standards for everyone – not just the lucky few.
