Faced with a global financial crisis, the British people weren’t prepared just to let the recession take its course – and neither were we. Labour chose to fight back, with bold action to stabilise the banking system and setting a course for economic recovery. It cost but it was necessary to shorten the recession and blunt its impact. Doing nothing would have abandoned people to unemployment, business closures and home repossessions.
The action we took together is working – the rate of unemployment, business failures and home repossessions have been lower than in the Tory recession of the 1990s.
Our task now is to build a secure economic future for Britain that can be sustained, using the potential of all its people not just a few. Britain must rebuild and balance its economy on sound foundations to build economic growth and create the jobs of the future.
